How can I get involved as a volunteer with Lexington Habitat for Humanity?

How do I sign up for a volunteer opportunity?

What types of volunteer opportunities are available?

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, including:

  • Construction and home building – volunteers will assist our construction team with framing, siding, painting, and other light construction tasks.

  • ReStore – volunteers will work alongside ReStore Associates and future homeowners to process donations, ring up customers, and support the operations of the ReStore.

  • Community outreach and events.

Do I need any prior experience or specific skills to volunteer?

No prior experience or specific skills are required to volunteer with us. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and skill levels. Our team will provide the necessary training and guidance for each volunteer opportunity.

What should I bring with me when I volunteer?

  • Please bring a water bottle, a lunch if you are volunteering on a construction site, and wear clothes you do not mind getting paint on.

Are there age restrictions for volunteering?

Ages 14 and 15

  • Must have a chaperone that is 21 years or older.

  • Must submit a release and waiver of liability for a minor signed by a parent/legal guardian prior to performing any volunteer activity.

  • Must not be on-site during construction.

  • Can paint, landscape, perform other light duties and help with site support.

  • Must not work on/with excavation, demolition, power tools or at heights above 6 feet.

Ages 16 and 17

  • Must have a chaperone that is 21 years or older.

  • Must submit a release and waiver of liability for a minor signed by a parent/legal guardian prior to performing any volunteer activity.

  • Can assist with general construction/carpentry.

  • Must not work on/with excavation, demolition, or power tools.

  • Must not work at heights above 6 feet or on the roof.

Ages 18+ are unrestricted.

Can I volunteer as part of a group or organization?

Absolutely! We encourage group volunteering. Whether you are part of a corporate team, community group, or a student organization, volunteering together can be a rewarding team-building experience. Please reach out to our volunteer coordinator in advance to discuss group volunteer opportunities and scheduling.

Will I receive any training or orientation before volunteering?

Yes, all volunteers receive appropriate training and orientation before participating in any activities. Our team will provide instructions, safety guidelines, and necessary tools or equipment for each volunteer opportunity.

How else can I support Lexington Habitat for Humanity if I'm unable to volunteer?

If you're unable to volunteer directly, there are other ways to support our mission. You can donate, shop at our ReStore, or consider spreading the word about our organization and the need for affordable housing in our community.

Expectations of our Volunteers

  • New volunteers must complete all sections of the Volunteer Waiver and return it to the Volunteer Coordinator. These will be available at all build sites and at the ReStore when you arrive to volunteer.

  • If an individual is unable to make the day that he/she has signed up for, he/she should contact the office as soon as possible.

  • Volunteers should dress appropriately for the task. Individuals volunteering on the build site should expect to be working outside and should expect to get dirty. No open-toed shoes are allowed on the build site Volunteers not dressed properly may be asked to leave.

  • Volunteers should arrive on time for their scheduled build day or volunteer opportunity.

  • Safety is of the utmost importance on the build site. Volunteers should follow the directions of the Construction Director, Project Managers, or other supervisor at all times.

  • Individuals must not be under the influence of alcohol or any illicit drugs while participating in volunteer opportunities.

  • Individuals under the age of 18 should consult the Age Restrictions Guidelines regarding applicable volunteer opportunities.

  • Individuals failing to follow the Volunteer Policy may be asked to no longer volunteer.
