On Wednesday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m., Lexington Habitat for Humanity staff, volunteers, community members and homebuyer Ronnesia will gather to dedicate Ronnesia’s new home. The celebration will honor Ronnesia’s hard work and perseverance as she reaches the next chapter in her homeownership journey. Ronnesia’s home is the first to be built through Lexington Habitat for Humanity’s newly revitalized Women Build program.
Construction began last September. Over 150 women came together over the past seven months to build the home from the ground up.
“Women Build is both a name and a call to action. Women build housing. Women build families. Women build communities,” said CEO Darryl Neher. “Through this effort, we celebrate the power of women coming together to build safe, stable homes and a stronger future for all.”
“Women Build demonstrates the incredible impact of women uniting with purpose,” said Women Build Chair and Board of Directors Chair Beverly Gamrat. “By building a home for Ronnesia and her family, we are also building hope that will strengthen our whole community for generations to come.”
Women Build is a coalition of women working together to increase access to decent, affordable housing. It is a movement driven by the power of women supporting women on a Lexington Habitat for Humanity build site, regardless of experience level. The program centers women investing in the community they love by building strength and stability through affordable homeownership.
Sponsoring this Women Build project and Ronnesia’s journey to homeownership is a variety of incredible organizations: University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union, The Fenton Dawson Memorial Fund, Jean Cravens, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and Valvoline. Plus, affinity groups and individuals interested in affordable housing came together to raise funds for the project.
